K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. N3UM and
W3GB operated Multi-1 HP in the July 2020 IARU contest.
Our goal was to beat our previous-best result, in 2019. We did that;
got 53% more Q pts and 11% more mults to claim a 70% higher score.
We did again what worked before in IARU; do mostly CW, best band
is 20m, 2nd best is 40m, get lots of mults and 5-point Qs.
For the first 15 hrs. 12-03Z we alternated 2.5-hr. shifts. This let
us rest, eat, do chores, and come back fresh.
We stayed on 20m. till 22Z; 10 hrs, 93% CW. Great condx, Kp = 0
or 1. At start N3UM ran for 22 CW Qs in 20 min; 2 were JAs! N3UM and
W3GB then clicked spots, focusing on 5-pt. Qs and mults. At 17Z we
had 128 Qs and 408 Q pts, 3.1 pts/Q. In the next 2 shifts 17-22Z,
20m. was at its best to EU; we got 193 Qs at 4.1 pts/Q. At 22Z we
had 321 Qs, 1195 Q pts, and 69 mults.
We got on 40m. for 2 shifts at 22Z. Band was great; FY, KH6, KL, UA9.
We got 167 Qs on 40 plus 14 on 20m. At 03Z we had 502 Qs, 1858 Q pts,
and 123 mults. W3GB quit to sleep and return early.
N3UM stayed and made 70 Qs on 80m and 12 on 160m. Not great, but
some low-band Qs and mults were good since our 15/10m. ant. was
faulty. After a few last 40 and 20m. Qs N3UM quit at 0555Z with
630 Qs, 2276 Q pts, and 165 mults. Bandmaps showed no more mults
or 5-pt. Qs left.
W3GB came back 0815-1159Z and got 53 Qs plus ZL, FK, and 3 VK zones,
and 3 HQs on 40m. In the last 15 min, he got DU and SV HQs and a 4th
VK zone on 20m. to take us to our final claimed score.
