Comments:
Conditions were pretty good this years contest. Lots of Es and short
skip on the bands. This made it hard to find a frequency at the start
and I felt like I was struggling in the first three hours. Hour three
was a rough transition from 20m to 40m for me but I ended up on a
great frequency on 40 meters and the band was really good and I was
able to make up the lost ground. In fact I had my best hours of the
contest in hours 4 and 5 on 40 meters.
On Sunday morning I had a hard time getting things going and two
several offtimes in the 15z and 16z hours as I just could not get the
rate going. And I was not able to put together an hour over 100 until
my next to last hour of my on time and it was when I made the jump to
40 meters that the rate finally took off. That seemed to be the theme
for the weekend "No meters like 40 meters." I ended up with 1300
contacts on 40 - the most I have ever had on this band in SS. 15
meters was very good here and open both short and long with a good
footprint but my rate was just a bit better on 20 meters so I mostly
stuck with that band mostly. But 20 was very hard - I just could not
seem to get a really good clear frequency most of the time. As good as
15 was I was a bit surprised that 20 did not thin out more - I suspect
that there were more stations from the NE on 20 this year with the
short skip than normal. I even heard K3UA and K3LR CQing on 15 - so
the high bands must have been good.
I do not worry about mults in this contest - and I almost always get a
sweep but some years it is not to be. My take on it is that I am not
going to alter my operating much to try to get a sweep because I do
not want to sacrifice rate for one or two mult. This year I missed NT
- I am sure that if there was on calling CQ on 20 I was also CQing on
20 at the same time. I spend most of the contest with antennas
pointed up that way but this year I did not hear one calling - they
could have been lost in the pileup / QRM on 20 this year if one
called. I also almost did not get PEI - I finally got one on 80
meters with just a few minutes of operating time left.
Great scores by K3UA/K3LR, KW8N, K4ZW and W2RQ with very big numbers
from the east. Also I know that W7WA will have a big number as well -
but I did not hear him much as I think we were mostly in sync on our
band choices. And great job by ND7K on the great score - that new
station seems to be working really well. I would love to see them
doing those huge hours at the start - it must be something to get the
timing down to have that sort of rate with the long exchange.
