WOW ! What a weekend !
This adventure started in January, when I was asked if I would like to operate
at Tariq's (N2QV) for CQWW CW. In previous years, the superstation was operated
by Kevin, N5DX. With Kevin operating, this has been a USA-winning station for a
number of years. Of course, my answer was "yes".
Then COVID came along. I absolutely was not going to fly. I considered driving -
a long 3 days each way. I know Kevin has done well in WPX, operating remotely,
but my internet is very poor. Here in rural New Mexico, my only option is 4G LTE
from Verizon or T-Mobile. I was skeptical, but Scott, WU2X, kept encouraging me,
and created a few new ways to deal with the high latency, and, more importantly,
the high jitter. We tried a number of approaches, including a Flex 6700, and
RemoteRig, but ended up using Scott's homebrew, software-only method for audio.
I used a dedicated Verizon MiFi box for audio and COM port sharing only, and a
hotspotted T-Mobile phone for everything else.
Scott, Tariq and I spent many hours over the past month getting this remote
operation configured and working well. I can not thank them enough for their
dedication. With all of this effort, I still gave probability of 48 hour success
at no more than 50%.
The contest was great ! The pileups on 40 and 80 Friday night, and 15 and 20
both mornings were incredible and really tested my 2BSIQ skills. I expected much
better condx on 160, like I experienced last year operating at K1ZZ, but it
didn't happen. I obviously made a tactical mistake not forgoing some rate on
20/15 to work 10 meters on Sunday morning. I'll never be as good as the kids,
who are 30 or more years younger than me. Congratulations to Nate, N4YDU,
operating NR3X remotely to the RHR Jonesport station. I knew our scores would be
close and was not disappointed.
Thanks again to Tariq and Scott. Thanks also to KL9A (TI7W) for loaning me a
K3S/mini, and Paul, K1XM, for making a change to the YCCC SO2R Box operation for
better remote operating.
