Comments:
Travel to Costa Rica opened up on November 1st, so it was a reasonably last
minute decision to fully commit to this effort.
The trade off to poor low bands is of course better high bands! Even 20m was
not very productive to Europe while 15m was really smoking. Great to work some
EU on 10m even. The 15m EU pileup on Sunday almost broke me. I could not break
through to work guys calling me. Even if I could, I struggled to pull a full
call out. I expected that level of intensity on Saturday, not Sunday.
Planning a strategy around the conditions proved to be hard. I tried to have a
plan for every scenario I could think up. It's a good thing, because nothing
played out as I expected and it was good to think through things before the
contest when sleep deprived. It seemed to pay off. Having a few years of
experience at the station really makes a difference when pushing hard to squeeze
out every last QSO and mult. The beverages were better than ever and were a big
part of putting QSO's in the log easily on a very poor 160m band.
A million thank you's to Kam and his family for hosting me. The amount of work
Kam puts into the station is the reason zone 7 can be competitive. I will never
lose sight of what a privilege it is to operate here.
Congratulations to Dan, N6MJ, for operating ZF1A remotely from his house in CA.
11,000+ Q's and a 411 hour while remote...are you kidding me? Amazing. A major
battle for USA #1 was between two remote ops also. I'd say the pandemic has
accelerated the acceptance and innovation in the remote operating arena.
I worked 117 separate DXCC entities this year vs 151 last year. That about sums
it up on mults. I was really stressed about mults at the half way point. A
focused effort to strategically tune for mults seemed to pay off in a big way.
Lots of rare stuff called in, and several moves worked. Looking forward to when
there are lots of active countries on again.
I didn't watch the live scoreboard, but it is really cool that the station owner
can keep up with the contest in real time.
Please do not get rid of the non-assisted single op 48 hour category in CQWW.
We missed all of our friends competing this year in the great 2 point land
battle, and Jose lighting up the world from D4. Juan, EA8RM, did a fantastic
job with a huge score from EA8. I bet the pileups were huge there!
