Comments:
The contest van needed new batteries. I installed the starter battery last week,
but finished the auxiliary battery with just enough time to load the van and go.
This week's hilltop was chosen to get rid of last week's power line noise
problem at a different hilltop. The main hilltop is still closed for
construction. This would be a roadside operation on a seasonal road with no
power lines nearby. Success! The receiver was quiet the whole time. That's a
good thing, because there were weak signals I would not have been able to work
otherwise. The site was clear of obstructions in most directions, but there were
some trees about 100' away, running from east northeast through south southeast
and I wondered whether they would cause problems. Slow QSB in the first hour
gave way to more stability and some increased signal strengths later. Nothing
over 300 miles, but I did work into fairly rare FN04 at 231 mi / 372 km as my
first contact and that was on SSB. Spent the second full sweep of the rotor
calling on FM, but no takers. Started calling K1WHS on CW and noticed my receive
was dead when I finished transmitting. Jumped into the cargo area of the van to
investigate. Switching the preamp off and on made no difference. Then I noticed
that the power light on the transverter was out! Turning the wire nuts tighter
on the power cord brought it back to life (thank goodness), but I never heard
Dave again. Worked my best DX in the 3rd hour with Massachusetts station K1KG
(234 mi / 376 km), squashing any concern about trees attenuating signals to the
east. Two thirds of my contacts were CW. Shut down at 10 PM. Station was 200+
watts into 10 elements.
