Comments:
Last year this station entered the contest in the same category. We had enough
fun that W5SJ, K4UEE, and I planned to do it again this year but the pandemic
put a stop to our plans.
Before we came down in November I contacted Marty, NN1C, and he gave me a
shopping list for what I might need to set the station up for remote. The plan
was to see if we could get it done before we return to the states in April. I
was not looking forward to 48 hours and asked my son, Kevin, if he would like to
try the remote if Marty could get it going for us. He said he would like that
and Marty came through with a last minute request. We had the TS-590S working
on Thursday.
The main radio was an ICOM-7610 and the TS-590 was set up so it could interrupt
the IC-7610 and work stations in-band or go separately. My receiving antennas
are not ideal for this (yet) but we managed to use both radios. For the first
several hours we were on the same frequency (partner mode, I guess it’s
called) and whoever pressed enter first was the one who worked the station
calling. Kevin was handicapped with the latency and about 75% of the time we
copied the same guy and I was first to take over the transmitter by a tiny
fraction of a second. However, there were some times we copied a different
caller and whoever won the battle would send something like R NW at the end of
the first contact and the other would press enter to work the other station.
That was fun. We averaged over 200 per hour for the first 6.5 hours of the
contest which got us off to a good start.
I did not have any expectation regarding how well we might do given that the
remote was a new thing here and I had the place in disarray with lots of cables
to relay boxes, etc. Fortunately everything worked and we came pretty close to
the all time record - either 50 QSOs or 3 multipliers would have done the
trick. This year the schedules we made on Sunday didn’t pan out and we
weren’t able to make a last minute comeback. Unfortunately ten meters
didn’t open on Sunday like it did for a couple hours last year. We had 37
stations on 6 bands but another 196 that were worked on 5 bands.
I will leave the serious effort in the phone contest to the guys at ZF1A and
they will be relatively rare for that one. I get more enjoyment out of working
on stuff and thinking about it than actually operating. I did, however, enjoy
working this one with Kevin.
Some statistics follow from CBS program.
