UGH! Things started badly and went downhill from there.
I tested all my antennas during the week preceding the
contest, and even Friday morning. So, after working ZF1A on
the low SE 40m Cushcraft, I switch to the top 40m yagi to
find a very high SWR and minimal signals heard.
Then after sunset I turn to 160 meters to find that the
transmitting antenna is hearing better than the YCCC
receiving array. The YCCC shows directivity but is very
weak and noisy. Listened to the transmitting antennas all
weekend.
Saturday afternoon I trudge through the snow to see
about the 40m yagi. Dig through the snow drift at the bottom
of the tower to check all the tape - everything looks ok.
Try to tighten the connectors on the 40m relay box - seems
ok. Back inside still no joy, so end up using the lower
40m antenna. Both QSOs and mults suffer badly as a
result. Spent a lot of time on 40, just no results.
Like everyone else, I surely did miss the easy QSOs and
Multipliers from the COVID-restricted Caribbean area. That
and the 40m antenna problems led to virtually all of the
decrease in score this year.
