Comments:
Thanks again to Andrew, ZF1EJ and CARS for hosting this remote operation.
Operating remote is definitely not the same as being on site but I appreciate
the opportunity during these difficult times. Also big thanks to Marty NN1C and
Bill W9KKN for fine tuning the remote set up. Also, thanks to John K6AM for
providing all the secret black boxes that made set up on my end seamless.
I have done this contest in ZF as part of a M/S team since '15. The original
plan for this year was to once again be M/S with the usual team of N6WIN and
W9KKN. A few weeks back we were a little behind on planning for the M/S so I
threw the idea out there that maybe I could do a single op instead. Tim and
Bill both agreed and thats how we got here. I really appreciate them giving me
this opportunity. I can now check SOAB in this contest of the bucket list and
go back to M/S again.
I spent about an hour this week playing with Morse Runner to practice 2BSIQ. I
would have liked to spend more time doing this but I felt pretty good about
where I was at. Like everyone else I saw that the propagation forecast was not
good and I went in just hoping to have at least a few 10m Q's. I never imagined
47 mults on 10!
The contest started out with great rates on 20 and 40. Sometimes 20 will close
down a little early but it hung in there until about 0130z. This allowed me to
really max out on the rate the first hour. I ended the first hour with 425 q's
in the log, 213 on 40 and 212 on 20. Thats about as good as its going to get.
I was very pleased with the start and the high rates continued through the
night.
My goal going into the contest was to win, but I had no thoughts at all about
breaking the record. At around noon on Saturday, after the great 10m opening,
it started to cross my mind that it just might be doable. I had to go look up
what the record was and put that as my target goal. I knew I would have to have
a good 15m opening on Sunday for this to happen so I pushed hard during the over
night hours on Saturday. I opted to take a 90minute sleep break Saturday night
as soon as the hallucinations started to hit. I could have easily made it thru
all 48 hours, but I wanted to be as fresh as I could be for the Sunday runs and
I think it was the right decision. I never had any issues after getting back on
and I powered thru until the end. With just over 7 hours to go, the old record
came and went. It was a great feeling and I just couldn't believe that it would
happen in a relatively down year propagation wise.
This is definitely a different beast than CQWW. I made a grand total of 0
S&P q's and was in 2BSIQ mode 100% of the time. The great thing about doing
this contest from ZF is there are always 2 or 3 bands wide open to the US at any
given time.
Thanks again to everyone for all the q's and QSY's. Not all of them worked but
I definitely appreciate all the attempts.
CBS data below for those that like that kind of stuff.
