Comments:

Was just testing out and practicing a newly-acquired FlexRadio Maestro and
stumbled on this contest on 20m around 20:30z. Worked a few and called CQ with
only one EU answer from SM2CEW. Then noticed all the activity on 40 and thought
I'd check it out. To my great surprise, I was able to work HA3NU at 20:48z...
nearly noon local time. The opening got better and between 21:30-22:00, I worked
six EUs, and another seven between 22:00-22:30. This may not excite those on
the E. Coast, but for W. coast this is very early to be working EU. After a
break of several hours, I got back on and worked more EU at 0000z... a more
usual time for the opening. This got me curious about whether 80m would open. I
managed to work GW5R at 01:59z via gray line ESP. No other EUs workable (though
some heard) until EU sunrise, when I bagged F5NTV, M7Z, GM5X, and GM0GAV; all
were tough. These were worked around 07:30z. I found that EU 80m was best copied
using diversity with the 4-sq. TX antenna in one ear and the east-facing
beverage in the other.

The Flex Maestro worked great...tried it in both stand-alone mode and as a knob
controller to SmartSDR. Still need more practice and more time perusing the
manual.

Since I didn't read the rules in advance for this contest, I was not aware of
the ) rule that remotely-controlled stations must use the call sign of the
remote station. In my case, I would have needed to be signing N6RO. Therefore,
this will be a check log. I can't help wondering what is the motivation behind
that rule? What perceived (or imagined) problem is it addressing?
