It never get's old visiting Aruba for contests. Fortunately I found nothing
major broken since the last fall's CQWW CW. Laying out the 2000 feet of coax and
control cables and then raising the two wire beams was completed in a leisurely
1.5 sunny hot days. But unlike last fall when everything was a lush green, the
landscape has browned out from prolonged dry weather.
With the sun playing games earlier in the week the expected conditions for the
contest were in some doubt. Fortunately things just seemed to get better and
better. Fantastic to have 15M open worldwide for many hours. Even 10 meters
showed some life. 20M was unproductive between 1400 - 1900 both days from here.
I'm once again pondering if using a special call is a plus. Many operators came
back to me with P40 instead of P44. Perhaps the 30 years of P40w 'conditioning'
is in play? Also found the number of repeat requests particularly high this
year, but maybe fast QSB conditions were a problem for all of us.
80 and 40 meters were particularly quiet here for May - listening on the TX
antennas was not painful at all. But the beverage antennas helped many times,
particularly when a local power grid noise would appear each afternoon.
CQ WPX is all about points per QSO, and is won or lost based upon how well you
manage 40 and 80 meters. I chose to stick with 40 meters most of both nights
sacrificing rate for the potentially higher Q points and overall score. The 4
ele 40 meter wire beam pointed at EU was particularly effective this weekend.
The 3 ele 80 meter wire beam was too at times but conditions were not quite good
enough to support a sustained rate on 80. The effect of wide-spread T-storms
across the USA the first night was obvious.
15 meters turned out to be the best band this weekend from Aruba. Seemed there
were endless callers both days from EU and the USA ... signals were very strong.
After enduring many years of depressed conditions this was a complete joy to
experience.
Congrats to OM3GI, LZ5DB, and KT3Y for their excellent operating skills and
superior band selection/time strategies. BRAVO!
Looking forward to the next time.
73,
John, W2GD (also known as P40W)
