I had so much fun operating the WPX Phone contest in Aruba two months prior that
I could not resist going back after DL6RAI mentioned that his home and station
was available. My Elecraft K3S and peripherals were still packed in my luggage,
ready to go. The P49V station had not been used in quite a while and nearly all
of the antennas had corrosion issues. John, W2GD/P44W came over to repair the
antennas and the only tower issue that could not be resolved in the available
time was a frozen thrust bearing on the 40m beam. I set up my radio in the
shack, made a new coax cable going to the relay box to fix an intermittent
connection issue and the station was ready on Thursday. Unfortunately there is a
constant neighborhood noise which worsens after dark. I had a slow start on 20m
and 40m and it was hard work digging out callsigns though the noise. I went to
bed expecting much better rates when the sun came out but for the most part the
much better rates did not really happen.15m and 20m were in good shape to Europe
and North America and my noise level lessened during the day which at least made
operating more pleasurable. I did have a few good hours on 15m Saturday
afternoon, my best hour produced 120 QSOs. I wish that I had more hours like
that. On Sunday I discovered that 10m was open, it was nice to spend a little
time on a new band. 31% of my total contacts were in Europe and 66% were in
North America. I decided to operate the new low power Classic category. Between
the local QRN and my lack of CW skills, copying was challenging at times and I
really appreciate the repeats many ops made. It was nice to see W2GD/P44W and
AE6Y/P49Y, both did an excellent job operating from their stations. My XYL
joined me this trip and we had a fantastic time snorkeling at Baby Beach, scuba
diving at Palm Beach and eating at several wonderful seafood restaurants in
Aruba. I added a few new photos to my QRZ page of us scuba diving plus a
sea-turtle and eel and also a photo of us having dinner on a pier.
