Plans were washed out literally! Rained all day Friday and into Saturday night.
Received 2 plus inches of rain. Normal for entire month is about 3.5 in. My
original plans were to setup in my yard with 40 and 20 meter verticals and open
wire fed inv vee, operating from a 16x16 equipment shed. I'm too old for that so
used the main station inside. If I was out with a group I would of toughed it
out, but I stayed in and dry. Rain finally ended after 12mid Sun morning, then
temperature went up to 80 at 3:00am... very bizarre!
Got off to slow start, I have periodic noise issues that appear in groups of
frequencies so it's not electrical. It was bothering 40 so couldn't hear much.
I've used FT8 before, but never on FD. Gave it a try and fought it out with the
crowd and made 69 contacts to start my FD. I operated at 7073 and 7075 to slice
off 1 kHz of all those signals, to make it easier to manage answering CQ's. Some
are still unaware or forgetful to operate WSJT-x in FD mode.
By 6:30 EDT 40m sigs were up, noise was down, so switched to CW, had a good run
of about 200 Q's, 40 was in nice shape out to the west. Took a break for an hour
or so, came back about 12mid, condx were still good but activity had dropped
quite a bit. Did many 1D stations retire for the night? Quit for the night about
2:00am. Got some sleep got back on 40 about 9:00am and worked most S and P to
catch the stations I missed while CQing before. Finally went to 20 about 10am.
Had a good run there. My G5RV Jr. worked well with short skip. Its only 25ft up
in my maple tree, but it keeps working for me and has helped as a receive
antenna, everytime I think about taking it down it does the job I need so it
stays up.
Not many stations operating with more than 4 xmtrs, hopefully it all gets back
to normal in 2022.
73 from soggy Michigan
