366 qso points x 2 (power) + 100 (emergency power) + 100 (W1AW bulletin) + 50
(submitted online) + 40 (2 youths participating) = 1,022 pts
We started intending to be QRP, but abandoned it after making a total of 3 QSOs
in the first two hours. We were not having fun, so we made a change. As the
power went up, the score multiplier went down, but we started having fun so it
was a worthwhile trade.
The level of activity on the bands was amazing. I had a ball making CW QSOs up
and down 80, 40, and 20 meters. I made some of my first PSK31 QSOs ever, and
many thanks to the patient ops who waited while I fumbled with fldigi.
So, I love FT8/FT4, but using those modes was not a good experience this
weekend. We need to come to some sort of agreement about what to do with
digital spectrum. On normal days, the FT8 sub-bands are fine. When they get a
little overcrowded, some people go to FT4 and it's fine. But the level of
activity was so incredibly high this weekend, and there was no clear plan or
recommendation for what to do when the passband filled up. What people actually
did was pick a spot and turn up their power. Could we, instead, have an
alternative dial frequency/frequencies so that people can make QSOs more easily?
