All antennas at 60 feet. 40-2CD, 3L20, 5L15 and 160/80 slopers below them (3
AB-577's). A3S at 40 feet pointed at SA.
I wasn't even going to participate this weekend. But I hadn't taken down my
antennas from ARRL CW. So I went out to the shack and did some S&P grabbing
mults because it was fun. I went back to the house around 10 pm and went to bed
around 11 pm. I woke up about 4:30 am, made a thermos of coffee and trudged out
to the shack. More mult hunting and then decided to call CQ on 40 meters and
had an endless bunch of Asians call in. Those Indonesian stations were
plentiful but hard to understand. By sun up I had a couple hundred stations in
the log. I got bit by the contest bug and decided to do what I could to salvage
a good score. Twenty and 15 were dismal on Saturday. On Sunday 20 meters
opened well to Europe and I filled in a bunch of mults that I didn't get on
Saturday.
I checked 10 meters often and wondered why I wasn't hearing any of the spots. I
checked both receivers to see if they were working on 10 and they were. Never
heard a peep.
On Sunday morning I was working a bunch of JA's on 40 and JW4PUA called in. I
was sure it was a JA and I asked for confirmation of the call. His accent
wasn't JA and I put him in the log. It turns out he is legit.
I put in 27.8 hours BIC which is a lot less than I would do if I had gone in to
do the best I could. Despite the lousy conditions, it was still a lot of fun.
And that is the bottom line.
My "field day" antennas come down this week until CQP in October.
