Comments:
A couple months before the contest Tim was invited to operate at KL7RA. He asked
me if I would like to do a SOAB from his station....no brainer there...YES!! 2
weeks before the contest I went up to the station on Sunday and we spent a few
hours tearing down and setting up for CQ WW SSB SOABHP. WE got 2 IC7610's with
Alpha 87A's set up, Got all 3 beverages (JA/EU/SA-CARIB) set up. Then we
installed the new K6AM lockout box, audio switching box and DVK boxes.
We fired the stations up and after a few minor tweaks, tested every antenna and
combo on each station. Everything was working after a few hours. I planned on
doing 48 hours if the propagation was there. Even with the major CME threat, the
propagation improved from previous years.
80/160 were fairly quiet all weekend and I was able to hear Europe well, they
just did not hear me well. I did run once on 3805 listening on 3625 and was
surprised to get 1 VE call me and 2 Europeans. I got a few Asians on 160 and had
a decent JA run on 80. 40 had decent sigs to Europe despite how crowded things
were but I guess the wall between AZ and Europe was very strong, only managed to
work lots of USA while running. The Asian and VK/ZL run on 40 was fantastic.
While running Asia Saturday morning I switched the 2nd radio to 20 meters just
before the sun came up. Usually only USA stations come through at first but I
was hearing all DX. I found a freq, and had a decent run going. I switched the
1st radio to 15 meters and it was hopping also so I changed my run to 15 and
what a run it was. I stayed on 15 meters running while using the other radio to
do alternating cq's or s&p. I was amazed at how many mults were popping in
on the 2nd radio between 20 and 10 meters. I was told by IR4X that 10 was open,
I went to the freq. he was on and nothing.
Sunday was a strange day, there were a lot of strong stations on 20 and 15
meters but I could not get any DX answering my CQ's, only US stations. Pretty
frustrating. Then I went to 10 meters and found a weak IR4X and TM3Y and worked
them easily. The band was loaded with stations way up the band but it was all
east coast stations with 59+ signals. Talk about frustration...I almost threw in
the towel at this point but I decided to do a 2 radio S&P run between 3
bands and found a lot of stations and mults to work until the west opened up for
me.
Overall I think the propagation will get better in the coming years, especially
when we loose the direct hop to USA stations, at least I remember it being that
way on the east coast. The station really performed superbly, not a single
issue. The Icom 7610's really provided some nice filtering and the visual help
of the pan adapter let me find signals and open spots easily/quickly. The
operator held up really well, got a little tough when I was not running but once
the JA's started coming in on Sunday, I was kicking again until the end.
73's and Thanks for ALL The Q's.
See you in CQ WW CW from ND7K as part of a Multi.

Green Heron Everyware switching worked great driving OK2ZAW stack matches, K7NV
prop-pitches, and 80m Tornado tuner. The K6AM Skunkworkz Seekrit black boxes
continue to be a reliable solution when the more basic brains at ND7K are in
need.
