Comments:
I like how this contest starts late on Saturday. I got a chance to (mostly)
finish up a pre-winter house project. I did not start setting up to contest
until 40 minutes before the start though...quick slap some food together...wolf
down a sandwich...fire up N1MM+, etc. I put a full time effort into this contest
for the first time since 2009, so I cannot compare conditions to recent years.
40m was where it was at for the most part. Worked close-in ME/NH/xMA at the same
time as IL/NE and OR/xWA/Cali...kinda crazy. Most of the tougher mults answered
me. I went to bed at 0830Z with only NT & VI missing. I kept the beam
pointed at AK/NT on 20m Sunday while running and VY1CO stopped by at 1632Z. I
went searching for VI on 15m mid-day Sunday for my last and found it 2019Z. It
is nice to focus on rate and not have to worry about finding mults.
It was great to see a lot of activity. But I think I missed the memo about
sending "21" as a check!! Is it really that they are new this year and
contesting!?! If yes then they on whole have good skills. There are 38 of them
in my log. Plenty of 18, 19, 20 checks. I plotted a histogram of the checks.
Also lots of "not in the contest" folks in the log.
Okay...I have to admit a shameful moment I had on Sunday morning on 40m. As
y'all know 40m is a net rich environment most mornings. You have heard this
story before. I found an open spot, called QRL, then started running. Maybe
15min later with a really good rate the heckling started and strictly voice
only...name calling, taunts, looking up my callsign, giving out my email
address, etc. For something like 15min I 100% ignored it with no response
whatsoever. Rate dropped by half. The bandscope was not showing other openings.
I was starting the day exhausted and couldn't take it anymore. My pride got in
the way and rather than just leave I lost it and said some things I should not
have. I should have been much more controlled and made only appropriate comments
not stooping to his level. This after having just returned from Mass not an hour
before! I apologize. If I could apologize to him I would, so this will have to
suffice.
