Sweepstakes 2021
My daughter’s, KC0INX, and Mike’s, K2KR, favorite radio contest is
Sweepstakes. We love it because the exchange is longer and a little more
difficult than most. We have been doing this together since she was 13, she is
now 33. It is a 20 year tradition. In the early years it was just her and some
other Barc Jr kids that did the operating. The first two years Steve London,
N2IC, worked with her and Jonathan,K0DE, and taught them the ropes and I was
mostly an observer. I have been working on catching up ever since. Toward the
end of the contest we saw a spot come up for N2IC and Kristin was able to work
him. She was surprised that he still remembered her, and very thankful that he
took the time so many years ago to train her in contesting.
This year we had a great year as she came home to work Sweeps with me. We did
very well this year for us but the almighty sweep alluded us again. Maritime
stayed in hiding the whole time or only came out over night to play. We had our
highest score in a few years with VA and MDC being our most worked sections.
This year all of our equipment played well together and nothing broke. We used
an Icom 7610 with an Elecraft KPA 500 and a Mosley TA 33 with 40 meter add on
and a dipole for 80 at 55 feet. We managed to work 20.5 hours of the contest
this year and managed to beat the goal we had set for ourselves. We were glad
that 15 meters was open as the crowd on 20 was just a little insane at times.
We hope everyone else had as much fun as we did and we hope to work you all
again next year, same time same place a year out. The only sad part is that
Sweepstakes is over for another year.
