Comments:
The contest was fun. The station worked without any real issues.
W7WA did a fine effort as always - and I was thinking 15m was good for
him but it appears that it was not there this year for him. I was
sure as I was having a few rough hours on Sunday that he was going to
town on 15 as the signals from the west seemed to be good on that
band. In the next few years 10 and 15 from out west will be very hard
to keep up with.
I tried to run for a bit on 15m - and while the frequencies were nice
and clear it just was not producing enough rate to stay - so back to
the very crowded 20 meters I went.
Unlike last year 20 and 40 were long most all the time. It made for a
congested frequencies. It also made it harder to work the close in
sections. I started on 20 meters on what was a good clear frequency
but stations moved in at very close spacing at times making the first
two hours slower than they could have been with a nice clear channel
but without any real options to move to - you just have to stick it
out and make the best of what you have. I got off to a pretty good
start with good consistent rate. Once again my best hourly rate is
happened several hours into the contest which just seems werid but
that seems to be the pattern of the last few years.
I was thinking I was going to miss a sweep again this year. My last
two sections were NL and WTX. An NL finally called me on 20m near
their sunset time on Sunday evening. That just left WTX. I usually
never have an issue working WTX but this year I did not have one call
me and I heard on work someone on 80m Saturday night but I did not get
his attention and even though I called CQ on 80m some I could not seem
to attract one. On Sunday I heard N5ZC with a pileup on 15m and I
called number of times but my backscatter signal was no match for the
loud east coast stations he was working. With about an hour to go I
had one call me on 40m and then (as others have noted) another one
called me within 10 minutes of the first.
I made a few changes to the station over the last year - the biggest
was to get a stack of two 20m antennas back up - I had these up for
many years but a wind storm damaged some of the 20m yagis and I never
did get the lower one back on the tower. It does seem to make a bit
of a difference. I used them pointed to the NE - 85ft over 45ft.
Great to hear everyone on the radio and I am already looking forward
to doing it all again next year. :-)
