Comments:
This was the second occasion doing this contest in SOAB from EA6, the first time
as non-assisted. Having the experience of the previous year helped me to correct
some aspects and identify some further weak points to improve. Hopefully in
2022.
The preparation for the contest started a couple of weeks before when I flew to
Ibiza. The idea of this short trip was to perform a few major changes to the
station and install the first of the Beverages, as I didn’t want to load too
much the days previous to the contest. In my mind that what a very nice idea,
and when I left the island everything was basically ready. However I didn’t
take into account the very well known Murphy’s law and by the time I came back
we had an issue in a box of LP filters (still to be further investigated), the
80/160 vertical had infinite SWR in both bands due to two different problems,
and one of the legs of a 40m long V towards NA was broken. Not a bad start.
Luckily we managed to fix everything in time.
In terms of operation, I went for a full-contest 2BSIQ operating mode: so much
fun, so much concentration required, and still so many situations to learn how
to properly manage (which of course motivates me to keep doing this)! I have a
couple of random thoughts that I think are worth mentioning:
- Pileup management and QRM. Especially on the first night, there were moments
with heavy pileups on both radios. On many many occasions (like in >30 QSOs
only during the first hour) I had to repeat the “599” messages at least
twice, as the operator being answered was basically QRMed by other callers who
repeatedly kept sending and sending their callsigns, which only resulted in
headache, angriness from my side and my QSO rate being drastically decreased...
- Having the (bad) experience from last year in terms of sleep deprivation, I
decided to go completely the opposite this year and stop for 3h around the
middle of the contest. This was definitely not the best time to stop, but I
really felt very well until the last couple of hours. I’ll try to go until the
second morning next time if I manage to rest well on Friday.
- I love having the scores online and I encourage everyone to do so, it keeps
things way more interesting. Ah, how I miss those hours when I really thought I
would manage to catch Filipe CT1ILT :)))
Previous points and jokes aside, it would have been a very good contest... But
on Sunday around 15z (right at the beginning of the 10m opening towards NA) the
computer that I was using spontaneously switched off. Kaput. Impossible to
switch it on again. Since we were using a very old PC as an auxiliary computer
the log could be recovered. At this point though, a lot of time had already been
lost and I was feeling so disappointed that I really felt like stopping. Lucky
for me, first Julio and then my dad EA3AVV by phone, convinced me to continue
(which, once full of energy again, I really appreciate: Thanks!). After the
incident (and not without problems), we managed to set up this very old computer
so that I could continue. To summarize, I lost almost 5 hours and when I
operated again I started first with only one radio while Julio fixed everything
for me on the second one.
But here we are, ready to learn from the mistakes and continue improving. In the
end, this is what a hobby like this is about, right? We all love this game!
Thanks to everyone who called and many thanks to Vicenç (EA6FO), and very
especially to Julio (EA3AIR) and Patro (XYL) for their hospitality and their
great help before, during, and after the contest.
See you in the next one.
