Comments:
First of all, thanks again to our always generous host Andrew / ZF1EJ for
letting us use his station remotely. The Cayman border has been closed for most
of the pandemic to outside visitors, only recently opening up. We really miss
in-person multiops and can't wait to visit again. We also have a growing list of
minor things we want to fix; being unable to access the station it has held
together surprisingly well given the harshness of the Caribbean weather.
But here we are, folks, CQ WW CW, the pinnacle of the contest season, the one we
look forward to all year. Typically at ZF1A, this contest belongs to ZF2MJ/N6MJ,
who, after several years operating ZF1A in person (and a few remote
appearances), decided that he'd try out this year TI7W with Chris at NP4Z. It
was exciting watching the race and preparation leading up to that, and
congratulations to both, despite the confusion of #whosucks :) But with nobody
else operating ZF, we elected to host a rare remote M/S effort for WW CW (as had
previously occurred for WW SSB), and we put together a team that seemed to work
together as well as we could have hoped.
Our goals were simple:
1) Have fun -- a few of us had never had the chance to operate WWCW from the DX
side. It was terrific to be able to welcome a few guys over to that world. A few
deer-in-headlights moments indeed occurred from the mind-blowing pileups, but we
survived unscathed.
2) Do well -- we tried to maximize the station's capabilities with two operating
positions (Run and Mult) along with a distributed DXLog setup using a
combination of the Gab, Slack, and Zoom. We managed to keep the operating
positions staffed for the whole thing with many family obligations and such for
various team members being satisfied.
Goals Achieved. We're really quite happy with the result. Not sure if exactly
this band of ops or circumstance will repeat itself, but I'd operate with any of
these dudes again any time. We also had a lot of help from N6MJ and NN1C leading
up to the contest, so thanks for the scheduling help and advice and such.
We had a few minor hiccups, as you might expect. Some internet peering issues
caused some packet loss to a few of our team members, but we were largely able
to work around them. We also got some reports of some less-than-perfect CW
keying sometimes -- some of us were using the RRC winkeyer, and others were
using RTS/CTS keying. It seems that both had their advantages and disadvantages
as well as quirks. The jury is still out on which of the two is actually
better.
In terms of propagation, the expectations were high, but we didn't quite get
everything that we wanted out of 10m. The news wasn't all bad, though, with some
of the 160m openings into Europe being quite stellar -- our beverages were
particularly quiet this weekend and made the difference several times for the
QSO.
Amps, Radios, and GHE held together pretty well -- the packet cluster managed to
break our logger a few times.
