Comments:
Band conditions were good at the start. Mitch had a great run at the start into
Asia for several hours. I struggled at the start on 20 as I was running a Rube
Goldberg set up trying to work around issues running that prevent me from using
Flex Radio SmartSDK for remote control in conjunction with N1MM for contests.
The work-around required using two different keyboards -- one controlling a
Windows 10 virtual machine (logging in N1MM) and another running voice
recordings in a Chrome browser connected to K7RL via RHR -- running on macOS.
Anyway, it took about 30 minutes for me to get into the swing about how to make
the arrangement fly. Even then, it proved awkward at best.
We had fun the first evening and were doing reasonably well.
However, I was occasionally receiving reports of marginal audio quality. In the
wee hours of the first night, reports of poor audio were mounting. When the
Asia run slowed down on 40 at about 1100Z, I took some time out to go up on 10
meters (closed locally at that time) and investigate further.
I had been listening to the audio recordings which RHR plays back through the
local browser. Although they sounded fine on my end they were not being
transmitted to the remote K7RL site in-tact. Listening to the monitor on the
transmit end (which one doesn't tend to do during the heat of battle due to
significant latency which almost makes it impossible to speak) I could hear some
serious audio artifacts. Even with low power -- they were not RF related.
I guessed it was due to poor audio bandwidth between RHR running in Chrome on my
computer and how the audio arrived at K7RL on the other end. I contacted by
Internet service provider and managed to upgrade my service -- on the fly -- to
double both download and upload rates. Unfortunately, even with twice the
upload speed as before, the garbled audio persisted. I reluctantly decided to
bow out of the effort rather than continue spewing obnoxious audio around the
world. Mitch gracefully offered to continue to the effort in my absence.
As a result, the vast majority of the effort was really a one-man show by Mitch
who pulled together a really respectable score when the M/2 with two ops
degenerated into M/2 with only one op. (I only contributed 17% to the total Q
count: 355 out of 2042.)
We had agreed going in that we'd take a more casual approach than in times past
-- getting a reasonable amount of sleep with only two operators. Of course, that
became even more of a factor once Mitch was left on his own. N1MM reported a
total time on of 27:38 out of the 48 possible hours.
