Comments:
[Apologies for the delayed posting. I left the contest operation a few hours
before the end to attend a business event, then started our Syrah harvest at 3am
the next morning!]
DX contesting from the US west coast is always challenging so the relatively
improved propagation was very much appreciated by our team. Thanks to all who
worked us!
Our operation was the silver lining in my aborted plans to operate as P49X after
skipping the 2020 CQ WW RTTY Contest due to the pandemic. Alas, the pandemic
still lives and when Aruba's case count went from 4 on 2 July to 1,200+ in early
August, I cancelled my travel. ICU patients were being airlifted to YV because
P4 ran out of beds. All the more incentive for us to remote the P4 station some
day. And, if we could mirror the outstanding remote implementation at K6MTU, it
would be spectacular.
Thus, the idea of a W0YK remote M2 for CQ WW RTTY from K6MTU was born. We
competed for operators with the N6WM (@N6RO) team and ended up with just enough
operator availability to staff a M2 around everyone's individual schedule
constraints. There was a 4-hour hole on Friday night where only W0YK was
available so he ran both radios on 40 and 80.
Conditions improved over the weekend with the highlight of a reasonable 15m EU
opening Sunday morning. Unfortunately, the improved MUF didn't help 10m as we
only managed to work 6 CA stations all weekend. 20 and 40 lived up to our
expectation as the workhorse bands of the contest. We're pleased with our
results there and have ideas for further improvement.
The K6MTU 80m 4-Square works well although at times the directivity isn't as
strong as we'd like. The 253 QSOs fell short of the 400 we might reasonably
expect and was almost entirely US. We wished for more multipliers. We only
worked 4 JAs and 17 total DX on 80m the entire weekend. Perhaps some
trouble-shooting and optimization is in the future.
Challenges
After the first QSO on 20 and the first on 40 in the 0000Z minute, both PCs
buckled under. One had painfully long delays and the other completely crashed.
The next half-hour was spent dealing with the issues. Kind of a discouraging
start, but we rationalized that there were still 47.5 hours to recover and it
was all upside potential!
One amplifier was limited to <500 watts to keep the PA temperature from
running away, sometimes even less power with short RX periods between CQs.
Saturday afternoon, Kevin K6TD had a vision that maybe the fan air filters were
dirty. Despite an oncoming cold, he braved the trek up the ridge to the station
and found the filter heavily clogged. I was operating 40m with it at the time
and the PA temperature dropped like a rock when he removed the filter. I had
visions of ice cubes being poured into the amplifier. There on out, the amp was
run at full power and it felt like a whole new unit.
One radio crashed a bit too often and after the contest Kevin determined it
might be due to a defective component for which a replacement has now been
promised from the manufacturer.
Pleasures
Ed W0YK has a luxury remote connection to K6MTU that bypasses the Internet with
a direct 5 GHz link to the K6MTU LAN. He therefore can't empathize with
complaints from others about latency and audio drop-outs.
Slack is an excellent means to effectively connect remote operators.
Topic-centric channels can be created, and threads within them, to keep all the
communication sorted topically. The live audio Huddle feature is especially
useful during digital contests where operators can talk freely with one another
whilst operating. Much of the time, though, we kept our PC mics muted to focus
on QSOs. Mark K6UFO claims that Ed W0YK was running either a drill or a vacuum
cleaner with his mic unmuted one time.
Thanks to the K6MTU founders: Scott W6SMQ, Lance K6GSJ, Geoffrey N6LXA, Stu
K6TU, Kevin K6TD. Their vision, expertise, investment and continued diligence
has resulted in an outstanding remote contesting station.
Working so many friends and familiar calls always remains a highlight of any
contest and this weekend lived up to that. Ham radio in general and contesting
in particular is blessed with the perfect venue for socially distanced
camaraderie. Remote operation takes this one step further for multi-op teams.
