George let me operate the contest at his place in Blanco County
again this year. This was my 20th time operating the ARRL 10
Meter Contest. I have not been operating much outside of my
annual effort in this event. Years when we have conditions like
this remind me of how wonderful the magic of radio is. You can
hear the world turning. You can even feel like you hear the
ionosphere almost breathing at times.
Conditions on Friday night started out slow but picked up with
some decent Eskip. I finished with almost half as many QSOs at
the end of the night as I worked in the entire contest last year.
I struggled at times on Saturday morning to get a good run going,
but finally found a productive frequency higher up the band. I
had one of those weird moments when a VE9 station operating
portable called in from British Columbia immediately followed
by a VE9 station in New Brunswick proper. Saturday night the
band basically died at sunset and I was still missing, of all
multipliers, Florida. Just as I was pondering this, though,
the band opened up to just Florida, and I worked a handful over
a couple of hours, but otherwise the band stayed closed.
Sunday morning was more productive for me, and I really enjoyed
the opening to Europe. I missed a few multipliers; probably the
most obvious were 9A, LA, SM, and OH. I only worked one CT
station, which seems odd given how many EA stations made it
into the log. In Asia, I never heard HL, BV, or BY. In W/VE,
I missed Wyoming, Yukon Territories, Northwest Territories,
Nunavut, and Labrador. Five XE states made it into the log,
which I think is more than most recent years. I never heard anyone
from HC, HK, or YV this year. My multiplier counts are definitely
down, but I beat my QSO total from 11 years ago, so that feels like
a win. I had fun.
