Kia Ora / Aloha from Palm Beach, Waiheke Island, near Auckland, New Zealand!
I am typing this from my phone!
I am here on vacation, and brought my KX2. I did crank it up to 10W to work my
one contact Stan AH6KO. Operating conditions were better than when I tried to do
the antenna at my friend’s flat, but not great. We walked down to Palm Beach,
about a .75 mile walk, but were a bit late getting there - so I didn’t really
chose a great spot, but it was on the beach and had a bench. But also against
the side of a cliff. But much better than at her place, I could finally hear
WWVH and FT8!
I could hear about 3 stations, and managed to work one of them after I cranked
it up to 10w. That was Stan, AH6KO, and he was S9! The other stations that I
heard but couldn’t work were about S4 or so. But hey, I’m at least
consistent in that I mostly work Hawaii stations!
I am very happy I made a contact! I tried a different antenna for the 19z CWT,
and made 0 contacts (and I couldn’t hear anyone else, either) and twice before
that and never got spotted, ugh. I’ll have some time to figure out the antenna
a bit better for the next CWT! Definitely still backpack portable, it’s not
actually that different than how I operate when I’m on Oahu!
73 and happy new year!
Heather ZL/AH7RF
