Comments:
We originally planned to do another M/M this year like we did last year, but a
few of the regulars dropped out so we scaled down to a M/2. We were very
fortunate to have Scott K7ZO join us for the first time. Scott is a west coast
Multi op veteran and was a great asset to the team. The real all stars were
Tina KJ6JET and Kelly KK6SCE. They put up with us all weekend and kept us well
fed. Tim N6WIN was busy in the weeks leading up to the contest putting up new
antennas. New additions included a Skyhawk at 100ft fixed at SA and a 4el 40m
OWA at 70ft to create a stack to EU. I can't tell you how many times through
out the weekend the ops mentioned what a huge addition these antennas were.
This was a great team effort and I think that is reflected in our overall score.
Dan, N6MJ
Hector, XE2K, stayed on me about making sure to get the above mentioned antennas
up. He and his brother are nothing short of phenomenal in making sure to get the
job done right and in staying until the job is completed. When they left we had
some switching to figure out with stack matches, GHE remotes, and a triplexor.
Dan, N6MJ, donated all of the needed items to make the Skyhawk that was brought
from his QTH work properly in the ways we do things here. The Skyhawk was an
answer to last year's 10/15m crews for a dedicated and loud SA antenna. Affixed
at 100' to SA and setup to be an AND/OR antenna to the other stacks, it really
gave our guys the flexibility they had been asking for.
The 70' K3LR 40m OWA addition was done because there was space on the tower and
HFTA claimed a dB of improvement to EU. Chris, KL9A, probably had the most
experience with this newly upgraded stack. He reports that the bottom antenna,
while low, is definitely a keeper... making the difference between marginal Q's
or not. At 490 pounds it was truly cool to watch Hector rig up a tram using two
of my towers for supports to get it up and in place.
RX verticals were another big addition this weekend. After using the K3LR four
square on 20m during ARRL DX CW on the inband radio, I knew we needed to expand
our capabilities here. A 20m RX vertical had proved to work great in ARRL DX SSB
and so the Monday of WPX CW a hired college kid and I added 10/15m RX verticals.
On Friday morning W4IX and I ran RG11 with KL9A installing a remote pre-amp for
15m. All crews reported success with these verticals. While they aren't band
opener/closers, like maybe a 4 square would be better at, they absolutely
improved our inband game!
Bill, W9KKN, came in on his first night from SFO and wouldn't allow himself to
sleep until he had our MOAS setup with all of the new RX options going. The K9AY
custom 8x4 box will soon be expanded to a 12x4 with RX BPF's for the high bands
also if we can twist his arm hard enough... expect to see this in Shawmut also!
The Icom 7610's here did an UFB job with M2. We used two tables of two
interlocked 7610's along with John, K6AM's Seekrit Skunkworkz black boxes.
Sharing audio, using pans, filtering in tight as needed, and not having
excessive phase noise was awesome.
Tim N6WIN

Green Heron Everyware switching worked great driving OK2ZAW stack matches, K7NV
prop-pitches, and 80m Tornado tuner. The K6AM Skunkworkz Seekrit black boxes
continue to be a reliable solution when the more basic brains at ND7K are in
need. MOAS RX Solutions now in place.
