Thanks for the QSO's! The first night from 0211 to 0240 I ran just 15 watts to
my new homebrew 2 el 40m phased array. A few fills were requested. 17 EU and 3
NA stations. I then put the Palstar LA-1K amplifier into operation for the
remaining operating at the 700watt output level. The antenna location is nothing
like what is recommended in all the antenna books!!! Not a nice clear field with
no trees, or chain link fences or other antennas or wood piles, etc. Just a pie
shaped city lot with trees and some woods in the backyard. You don't
"LAY" radials here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, instead you 'weave' them
through roots, around rocks, through sometimes streams and all the plants. The 2
34'+ elements have 90 radials total with 28 shared across a common bus. The F/B
is great, around 20 dB or so in the NE/SW directions, 60/240. The broadside is
FB as well and was used to make Q's with stations in the 150/330 direction.
Operation was from 11pm to midnight both Friday and Saturday nights. Sunday AM
yielded some poor conditions, just 12 minutes operating before failure of some
kind in the phasing box as the SWR shot up to 3.8 to 1 has not yet been
resolved. A fun time even if short! 1 hour 45 minutes of operation. Now to fix
the antenna, great possibilities ahead! See you in the next one. 73, Roger
