I did not really plan on operating this year’s SS CW. I had been busy taking
care of my wife along with everything around the house following her hamstring
surgery, on Friday the doctor said it was now OK for her to start walking on the
leg again. This made things around here much closer to normal so when we got
home from the doctor’s office I got the station and snacks ready. About 10
minutes before the start I discovered an indicator problem with my top 20m beam
which is on a ring rotator with a prop pitch motor. This had worked fine the day
before but there was not much I could do except to aim it by eye and not focus
on the problem. I still had two other 20m beams that rotated perfectly. On
Monday after the contest I climbed the tower and discovered that the insulation
on the connector for the Reed switch had slight lightning damage from a recent
direct hit and Saturday’s rain caused a voltage leak to ground. Other than the
rotator issue, the station worked perfectly. My new pair of 4el 40m beams worked
very well and 40m was my best band this weekend. Conditions were very good, even
with the rain the bands were reasonably quiet here. During the first day I
focused more on running than on multipliers so I was surprised by the time I
went to bed I had worked all sections except WV. On Sunday morning it was easy
to find a WV station but it took a little time to work him through the pileup
for the sweep. Getting the sweep is always a thrill and really wonderful when
there is still half of the contest left. I worked only one station in NL, PE and
VI, I have backup contacts for the rest of the sections. There were a number of
hours where my CQs were unanswered but either clicking on spots or spinning the
dial seemed to keep the rate meter moving. I had hoped to make 1000 QSOs in this
contest but once again I fell short. I am not an expert CW op and I had not done
a CW contest in 1 1/2 years but somehow that made this even more fun. I would
like to thank everyone for the QSO’s and also thank my QSL manager WD9DZV for
sending out cards and uploading my logs onto LoTW, EQSL and Clublog.
