Comments:

Station: Elecraft K2/100, Drake L-4B (1 kW) amplifier, 80-meter dipole at 50
feet fed with open wire, more or less broadside to southern Europe.

Conditions were pretty good, with Europeans available from mid-afternoon past
their sunrise (I didn’t stay up this late, but did hear/work some in the
predawn here). The opening was deeper than I’m accustomed to, with plenty of
zones 15, 16, and 20. Japan was notably difficult, with only a handful of ESP
(unworkable) stations on Sunday morning. However, VR2KW (Hong Kong) and DU3T
(Philippines) were loud, 400-Hz apart, and utterly unworkable under the piles of
callers (and what I imagine to be a high local noise floor). South America was
notably absent as well, with the two Argentine stations I heard were ESP and
unworkable, a lone Brazilian was worked with effort. The remaining “South
Americans” were ABC islands. Like the Asians, the South Americans were mostly
off the ends of a full-wavelength dipole, not exactly a recipe for SNR.

Two new band countries were: UK9AA (Uzbekistan) and A44A (Oman) Not bad for no
cluster/RBN spots and already having 200+ countries on 40… Pleased to work
most of my friends who live/travel in/to some of these far-flung places.
Thanks!

73,
