We arrived at the Point Amour Lighthouse late Monday afternoon after a 10 hour
drive from Goose Bay (normally 6 to 7 hours but we made a number of stops to
work the amateur satellites from some rare grids) and unloaded all the
equipment. It's a good thing we did, since there was a snow storm over night
that blocked parts of the road to the lighthouse. Tuesday morning we drive as
far as we could, parked the truck, and walked the final 2km to the lighthouse.
We battled the wind and blowing snow and setup the antenna with 16 ground
radials and assembled the station. By the time we were done and it was dark and
we had to use flashlights to walk back to the truck.
Wednesday morning we had the road cleared and were able to drive right to the
lighthouse. We spent Wednesday working the other HF bands and went back the
station for JA sunset and worked a bunch of JAs and a few VKs and ZLs on 80m FT8
and CW. Despite trying we didn't work any JAs on 160m FT8 this year.
Thursday was a repeat of Wednesday. After staying for JA sunrise we decided to
head back to the motel as another storm had started and we didn't want to risk
being snowed in at the lighthouse. That foiled our plans to go back for JA
sunset.
The storm Thursday night was a combination of snow, rain, sleet and high winds.
Friday morning we tried to go back to the lighthouse but it was too windy and
the road was covered in ice. When we managed to get the station mid Friday
afternoon our antenna had taken a beating in the overnight storm. Luckily the
vertical part was still up but the radials we all disconnected and scattered
around the grounds. It was getting late and close to the start of the contest
so we decided to skip the ground radials and use a couple of raised radials
along the top of the wooden fence line, one going NE and one going SW.
The contest started well but it didn't take long to realize that condx were down
from the last time we were here in 2020. We finished the first night with 887Qs
53S/P and 59C for 652K pts. This was well down from our 1172Qs 54S/P and 82C
for 1.2M pts first day totals in 2020.
We managed to pick up another S/P and 7 more countries the second night but were
still down 275Qs, 4S/P, 10 countries, and 600K points from our 2020 effort. Our
points/QSO dropped from 7.37 to 7.0. This was mainly reflected in the 200 fewer
EU, 10 fewer SA, and 10 fewer AS. Overall, our NA QSOs were up 7% and EU QSOs
were down 6%.
In the end we missed DC, ND, WA, WY, VE5, and VE7. Never heard any of the
missing states, but listened for every VE5 and VE7 we saw spotted. They were
either very weak or not heard at all. A lot of the times we couldn't even hear
any stations calling them.
Highlights include ZL3IO calling about 30 minutes before we shutdown after the
second night and VK6VZ calling with 15 minutes left in the contest! We'd been
trying to work VK6VZ on a schedule all week without success, but glad we made it
in the contest.
This was our fourth time operating the CQ160 CW contest from the Point Amour
Lighthouse. This ended up being our 3rd best claimed score.
We missed having Frank VO1HP join us this year.
We had the antenna taken down, the station disassembled, and the truck loaded
2.5 hours after the end of the contest.
Some interesting things (at least to me) about the contest:
It's always fun (and frustrating at times!) trying to work EU in the mid
afternoon while it's still daylight here. EU is working EU and not expecting
calls from NA at that time. After calling them, if they heard us they answered
with "4O2?" or "UO2?" or most of the time "??".
We'd reply with "V V V VO2 VO2 VO2AC VO2AC". There'd be a longer than
normal pause as they were processing in their mind who was calling before they'd
come back again with the right call and report :=)
