Comments:

After a bit of success working QRP from home last year, I decided to take my
gear on the road and operate remotely. I worked from Victoria's Beacon Hill Park
(POTA VE-5540), right next to the giant flagpole. WX was lousy; it was cold and
cloudy on Sat, and drizzled all of Sun. I brought an Alpha Vertical portable
antenna, and I can't praise it enough. My antenna was set up for DX and band
conditions were great on 10M and 15M. I was getting into EU with 5W, so you know
that Sun Cycle 25 is going to be a lot better than it's been in years. I thought
that by operating as a contest and a POTA, I would be swimming in contacts. But,
because there is no self spotting, even for QRP stations, I was never able to
make any QSOs by calling CQ. Every single QSO I made came from painstakingly
hunting, tuning, and waiting for the pile-ups to die before I got my call in.
Luckily, I had amazing height and a great antenna - or else I would have been
toast. Even still, my log is really just a collection of high power stations
with directional antennas, contest stations, or special event stations. My hope
is that next year there might be more categories (portable? outdoor?) or the
ability for QRP to self-spot. Cheers!
