Comments:
That was pretty fun. Rates have been better, but they were still quite good.
Started out running on 10M and switched to 15M at the 30 minute mark when things
started to peter out. Rate stayed around 160/hr and didn't let up. I didn't want
to stop! Finally took my first break after six hours. This didn't leave a lot of
time for working mults later on 80 and 160. I kept wondering if something was
wrong with my 160M RX. No signals heard until a loud K0RF appeared at 0453Z. I
heard and worked my first east coast (Alabama) on 160 at 0529Z when I had to QRT
with only 10 mults on top band. I'll never know how many more mults could have
been snagged in that last 30 minutes.
Speaking of mults, after reviewing last years results, it was obvious that I
needed to concentrate more on them this go around. I used SO2V technique a lot
more. I had 197 mults last year and decided a good target would be 250. Came
real close to that without a huge decrease in total Q's. There is still lots of
room to improve. There were at least a half dozen DX mults there for the taking
(KP2,KP4,8P5,TI,ZF,XE,CO) and I only really found them on 10M (5 total). Most of
the improvement may simply be due to having 10M open this year and not due to
improvement in the operator!
Is it just me, or were there an extra number of stations with really bad audio
this go around? There was one point in the contest where it seemed like every
station that called was severely distorted, mainly from over-compression. And
no, it wasn't a run of PY's! I didn't point out the bad audio. Had I been a
casual entrant I might have taken the time to explain the problem.
Thanks to Chuck N7MZW for putting the GMCC teams together. Definitely noticed
the lack of six easy cross-town QSO's from GMCC'er W0ETT, who was in Texas for
this one. Ken still got on from his remote station at a cabin up in the
mountains, but I never heard him. Thank you Rob KT3M for supplying half of my
Colorado mult needs.
