Comments:
We had a great time.
No major equipment problems. About 5 hours into the contest, the output of the
Larcan 2m amp dropped from 1000W to about 700W. I fought my urge to
troubleshoot all night and somehow got into the mindset of “just use it like
this until after the contest”. If it totally failed, backup amplifiers were
available within about an hour round trip. It made it to 0400Z Monday. Plenty
of time to troubleshoot before June.
Other random notes:
Some enhancement to the West Saturday night. WW2Y thought the N9XG decode on
432 FT8 was a fluke until it repeated. Then we worked him. 618 miles. FT8
certainly does allow some amazing random DX QSOs. That is our furthest 432
contact to date from N2NT. Looking at N9XG’s antenna on QRZ.COM, I see he was
doing most of the work.
2m MSK QSO with KO9A Sunday morning was a bit comical. I was sending TX3 and
got a false decode for TX4 from Jim. I manually stopped sending my TX5 about 8
seconds in, thinking, ”I can manually recover from this”. Then, I see Jim
thanking us for the QSO on PingJockey. What are the odds he would decode my
inadvertent 73 during that 8 second transmission? We started over. QSO took
about an hour to complete.
As others have noted, a nice opening to PY/LU/CE on 6m Sunday night.
Thanks to Andy and his XYL Bonnie for hosting Peter and I this weekend.
John N2NC, for the N2NT VHF team.
