Comments:
N5TJ and AI5A came over and we had a great time on and off the radio. This was
AI5A's third contest from here and his first multi-op contest with us. AI5A
operated the NAQP SSB and CQ 160 SSB contests earlier this year. This is only
N5TJ's third contest from this station as well. Jeff did the CW sprint from
here last September and was part of our M/S effort in the CQ WW DX CW contest.
Even though I have known Jeff for most of the time I have been a ham and he
lived in the Dallas area I have not operated very many contests with him. The
last time he and I did an SSB contest together was in the 1986 CQ WW DX SSB
contest when we were both at N5AU. That I as on 15 meters and Jeff was on 20
meters.
Conditions were pretty good but did get better as the weekend went on and the A
and K settled down. This contest is always a rate fest and early on we set our
sights on 5000 contacts. Sometime Saturday Jeff decided we could make it to
5500. We almost got there. The last serial number we gave out was 5475.
Already looking forward to the next one.
I still have damage from the ice storm a few months ago and I now have a large
pile of new aluminum tubing sitting on my front porch. Now that this contest is
over it is time to start taking down antennas and fixing them.
One 20m antenna is broken and I do not think there is a
single 20m element that is not bent or twisted out of the plane with
the others in some way. Two lower 20m antennas have directors that are
at 45 degrees - place looks like crap - but I still seemed to get out
OK but I have a summer of replacing a lot of 20 meter elements.
