Hi Gary,
I can't tell you anymore from this side of the pond as I seem to be the
only one in the UK playing with power in the mobile.
I have met a fair number of other amateurs and 11m boys at rallys.
Probably the most serious operators, one never hears about for obvious
reasons, they tend to keep themselves to themselves.
Remember we have a 400w pep out limit!sic
Many years back, I believe our authority's used to offer high power
(1KW) licences to a limited number of operators who were experimenting
with eme and other low signal work.
The other group whiich tend to go for broke is the NFD groups, portable
tower, home made yagi's, diesel generators etc.
One fella up in the north of England whom I've spoken to on the
telephone had to downgrade from 10KW to 7KW as he did not want to
install 3-phase to his house! I told him in that case install the
3-phase in the car. [grin]
At our wellknown Woburn rally (you've all been there while on vacation
to England) yesterday, I think I opened up a few eyes to the Texas
Bugcatcher and my 8-pill homebrew. Told them the over smart SGC cube was
just temporary as it only cranks out 600.
Bugs are just not imported into the UK so the few that are here have
been imported on a personal basis.
I know there is a niche market for good heavy duty mobile HF components,
(we can build, sell and operate solid state/tube amps that cover
1.8-30Mhz) and are not constrained by mobile amp rules from the Federal
Cookie Co' so when I win the lottery I'll set up and start importing
from your shores.
I'd very much like to hook up with the US on 160m phone as soon as
conditions allow. I've had power on 11m for 20 years but this is my
first year with an amp for the hf bands. American comes into europe very
early in the morning when we're asleep so if any of you are hearing
europe in the evening do email me with a time and I'll stay out over
night on 160m. I'm not interested in any other bands, been there, done
that sold the t-shirt, too damn easy.
My neighbour will standby with 3KW into his tower on 160m just in case
I'm not heard. I'm aware that summer conditions are not too good for dx
into the US/Europe on top band. I'd like to try anyhow.

Hiel headset - dx insert - Datong RF speech processor (set at 12db) -
Harris (ex US army, 10 poles of filtering. I can hear things that don't
exist [grin) - homebrew 8-pill 1200 Bird watts pep o/p - torroidal
impedance matching xfmr - Texas Bugcatcher 13'6" tall with 20" capacity
hat, Hustler corona ball.
/M PSU Leece Neville 200 amp alternator - Adverc alternator controller
(same as Heart Interface unit) - Heart 240 amp diode splitter feeding
twin batteries 240A deep cycle. Full digital monitoring of all current
and voltage points. 14.6V X 150A = 2.19kw dc i/p = Bird 1kw slug bangs
hard over!
                       Weak I'm not.

This is of course all fiction as I only drive my amp to 400W!
