Good point, Tom. That was one uncheap, messy test---and apparently an 
inane one too because a piece of vital info was not discovered---i.e., 
the actual PIV of the rectifier assy..  

In my workshop, such a test would have consumed under 50 watt seconds of 
electrical energy.   Also, a PIV test, if done gently, does not destroy 
the device under test.
