So why should mercury vapour rectifiers produce more ozone than anything
else? They don't produce ionisation outside the envelope. If you have
ionisation, it's due to the HV.

But a linear on AM should be loaded up to the full PEP, preferably using
100%modulation. Then without modulation, the carrier should be 1/4 of the
PEP power. If you can load up with carrier to fully drive the linear to full
PEP out, then you can back off the drive until the carrier is 6dB down. PEP
= carrier power times 4 for 100%.

A 4-1000 with 5KV dc on the plate 100%plate modulated has a peak plate
voltage approaching 18KV or so at the peak of the RF cycle(s) occurring  at
the peak of the modulation cycle.

X rays should be guarded against where plate voltages exceed 10 to 15 KV -
altkough it's fairly simple at those voltages.
