[AMPS] ALC - an elementary question

I don't use ALC on my TS-930--SB-220 conbination, because at full blat my
TS-930 won't overdrive the 220. That leads me to conclude that as long as
I run the 930 cleanly, the 220 won't add any additional distortion.

But Tom's recent posting about his TS-450/SB-200 combination had me
reviewing what (I think) I know. It seems to me that the 450 would be
capable of overdriving a single 3-500 and maybe even the 572s in the
SB-200. Certainly, an FT-1000D could do so. That being said, ALC seems
like a good idea, in theory, but I wonder -- how can inter-unit ALC work
with an amplifier and a transceiver that weren't designed to work together
in the first place? What assurance could you have that the transceiver ALC
circuit was supplying the right voltage at the right time?
