I fully agree with all those comments about roller coaster reliability - at
least for the conventional approach. The reliable variety winds (or unwinds
as the case maybe) a silver plated phosphor bronze strip from an insulated
former to a metal cylinder. The technique has been used by Marconi, Plessey
& Collins to my knowledge - probably a few more besides.  

But a vacuum variable and switch is likely to be cheaper - certainly an air
variable and switch will be...
