Reliable roller coasters need  precision engineering, and if used in
professional (as opposed to amateur equipment) where far more wear can be
expected, troubles can (and do) appear. This is especially so where an auto
tune system is used which leads to a lot of adjustment when the receive
frequency is changed, even if the tx isn't fired up. The approach of the
tape winding from the metal drum to the insulating drum gets around the wear
problem to some extent, but it isn't cheap. Properly engineered roller
coasters of any variety are not cheap - Dan's photos show that they can't
just be thrown together in a back yard garage!

Which is why I prefer designs that don't use them.
