Further to Dick's comments, the space charge can be depleted at various
rates. 1 Amp for 1 second requires 6.29 *10E18 electrons / second; 10 amps
for 100ms requires the same number of electrons in 100ms, and so on. Oxide
coated cathodes can deliver very short pulses of up to 100Amps / sq cm of
cathode area. So if you merely (!) take out the right quantity of electrons,
you can run higher current in the pulse. However, they do have to come back
round the circuit (Kirchoff's law), so the cathode construction has to be
able to stand that peak current without fusing or buckling because of
magnetic fields.
