They fell out of the mainstream because better equipment came along.  
It's not that they didn't tell an accurate picture.  A slotted line can 
give you a great reading of SWR but a network analyzer will do it much 
more easily.

For measuring resonances, GDO's are great.  For measuring, impedance, no 
they can't do that.  Being able to measure resonance is quite a useful 
thing, so I think it's a good tool.
