They work fine as long as the world is perfect. Otherwise they get real
grumpy with much over a 1.5:1 VSWR,  transients, intermittents, etc.

Yes, real robust PIN's exist but not at prices that non military/govt 
users can afford.

A vacuum relay with a speed up circuit is easy to implement and like the
Energizer Bunny...just keeps on going.
