Total twaddle. Do you not operate VHF SSB ? Probably not by the sound of
this tirade. Maybe you are not in a popular area ? The VHF receive systems
used nowadays certainly have lower noise figures than those from the 70s.
The VHF dynamic range requirement is often very high.

As for intermods at HF, perhaps you are in the relatively quiet Western USA
(from your call). Come over here to Europe and listen to a busy HF band for
wider than necessary signals and serious band overcrowding. Try and find a
clear frequency on a contest weekend. I agree the HF receivers have not
improved much but with so much overcrowding and knowing how to make the
signal cleaner it is irresponsible not to do all one can.
