About 40 years when reliability tests were done at Marconi, they used
equalising resistors. I beleive that they had many failures without them.
With modern diodes, all from the same batch, it may not be necessary. The
resisitpors and capacitors do need to be rated for the voltage - 1kV rated
resistors aren't that common cheap - which is probably why people have had
trouble with over run resistors blowing.
