I think it's more a case of charging for selecting rectifiers to string
together. Despite what is sometimes claimed, semi conductor processing is
not as exact as we would like, and the variations you can get across a
wafer, let alone between diffusion batches, can cause major problems if you
are pushing any particular parameter.
