No the IC706 is not my main radio, i only use that for mobile
operation. My measurements were all done with HP 141. No my reciever
does not suffer from overload problems,, i have a AOR 7030 plus, its
3rd intercept point is +30dbm, i also have a Racal 3700 series
receiver, with tuned band pass unit. So i am equiped well enough i
think to observe these problems. Besides i run QRO+ and i like to make
sure my signal is clean.
I must admit i prefer the old TS830s as a driver for my 8171,, its
phase noise, 3rd/5th order products are better. I have dropped the
plate voltage for improved 3rd order IMD. Anyway most people cant
distinguish my 8171 signal and barefoot, in terms of IMD. That to me is
a good achievement. As far as i can tell Icom radios have particular
problems with higher IMD products, the IC 781 was well known for this
problem. But if you like beeing as wide as barn door, dont worry buy
whatever suits your fancy.
