You are absolutely correct, Jon.  Many (dare I say most?) companies use
their Marketing dept to "run" the application notes engine.  They have
decided that offering good engineering data helps their sales so directly
that it "deserves" to be "elevated" into Marketing :)  I guess good
engineering itself doesn't fit this description :(

These companies have figured out, however, that it takes a technical person
to write these notes, so for better or worse, they put technical people into
Marketing or tag Engineering to write them (but under direction of
Marketing).
