Here's an idea for a cheap screen supply.

Start with the plate supply from a very old Motorola or GE VHF/UHF base
station.
 They usually generate about 600V, 200W CCS.  Pull out the 5R4's and replace
with solid state rectifiers.  Then install 6L6, 6880, EL34 class tubes as a
series
regulator into the 5R4 sockets and figure out a series regulator circuit
from an
old handbook.  This approach saves a _lot_ of work.  If you feel a bit more
modern, use a high voltage hexfet or equivelent for the series regulator.  I
did
this for a 4-1000 screen  supply and it worked well.
