[AMPS] RE: Graphite Anodes

Graphite anode material is generally used in high-vacuum tubes to provide
[continuous] "getter" action which aids in maintaining the high-vacuum state
in larger high-vacuum envelopes.  "Getter" action reduces residual gases
left over from the manufacturing process and gases which are generated by
the other elements of the tube during normal operation.  The graphite
surface is subjected to special processing to improve it's thermal handling
capabilities as an anode.

There are other materials which can be used for anodes which provide
"getter" action, i.e., zirconium and tantalum, however, graphite is probably
the most cost effective material from manufacturing and environmental
aspects.
