It would be identical to what you would do with a more complex 
regulator. I'd use a series diode string to the screen with a properly 
designed resistance across that diode string for reverse current.

Did you friend have an electrolytic across his zeners? Like near the 
socket?

IMO, an MOV is a waste of time. I'd use a gas discharge tube in 
parallel with an electrolytic IF arcing was a big deal, and the series 
diodes.
